Fun 1-2-1 guitar lessons to empower you to make your own music.
Let’s find your artistic voice, together!
Hi, I’m Tom
… and I believe that everyone is capable of being an excellent artist.
However you learn or whatever your ambitions are as a musician, I’m here to empower you to reach those lofty goals and make music that you love with your guitar.
I want to help you to learn your favourite songs, write your own music, develop and refine your technique and equip you with the skills to improvise so that you can jam with other musicians.
Using my adaptive teaching style, let me show you how fun I think music, and learning music, can be.
What I teach
I picked up a guitar at the age of 14 and still haven't put it down.
At 16 I started playing in my first band and teaching my fellow sixth-formers how to play classic rock songs (all about the cool riffs!) and songs to strum around a campfire. After a few years, local parents drafted me in to teach their kids how to play guitar (classic cool riffs too, funnily enough).
At 20, I started a degree at BIMM in Brighton and got to spend all my time dedicated to music. This is where my music palette expanded - as well as rock, metal and jazz, I brought pop, funk and soul into my repertoire - and I got to start collaborating with other musicians.
I got my degree in 2012 and went on to get my PG Cert in teaching and learning from BIMM in 2019.
I'm in my 30s now and I still haven't put the guitar down. As well as continuing to teach, I play guitar in electro-rock band Tidal Rave and bass in alt rock/emo band Adalia.
I'm still by the sea in Brighton with my partner and our two kitties, Pickle and Jinx.

Lessons are usually an hour, but I can accommodate shorter lessons if needed. Just ask!
-
If you’ve picked up a guitar before and know a few chords or can play a little tune, that’s more than enough for us to get started! If you’re feeling a bit unsure on whether you know enough to work with me, send me a little message via my contact form (scroll right to the bottom - you’ll see it there!)

Weekly or fortnightly lessons are best so we can get you playing regularly.
I schedule lessons in advance for the coming calendar month, so your lessons will usually be on the same day of the week at your chosen time.
-
Hourly lessons are £36 and are booked and paid for in advance as a block of 4-5 (depending on lesson frequency). We will schedule our lessons for the coming calendar month in advance.
If you can’t make it to your arranged lessons, you need to cancel or reschedule it with at least 24 hours notice, otherwise the money paid will be forfeit.

I work out of my home in Hove, near the town hall. I have a private room with all my gear and equipment set up and ready, so I’ll make you a cuppa or cold drink and we’ll get straight into it!
My cats do come in and out of the cat flap, so you might even get a quick cuddle from them.

I use different video call options for different students as needed, such as Skype, Facebook Messenger or Facetime (on laptop).
You’ll need a webcam and mic with decent quality so I can see and hear what you’re doing. A stable internet connection in a private room with little noise is essential too.
I can accomodate different timezones to my own (GMT) too, so just let me know if that might be an issue and I’ll see if I can make it work.

I get that you’re feeling nervous, I really do. It’s only natural when learning a new skill.
Whether you’re wondering if your musical abilities are up to par (they are), or if there’s space for you as someone underrepresented in your genre to exist (there is), or if you’re afraid of looking silly in front of me (you won’t) - I am here to hold space for you, encourage you and make you feel safe.
I want to open up new avenues for you in music so that you can explore freely, take up the space you deserve to in the scene and push you - gently - to reach your goals.
If you have something in particular you’re nervous about in working with me or any teacher, please reach out and let’s have a chat.
